Vortrag mdw: „Popular Viennese Electronic Music 1990–2015: A Cultural History”

In the 1990s the phonoTAKTIK festival featuring outstanding electronic musicians like Electric Indigo, Fennesz, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Pulsinger & Tunakan made Vienna a creative hot spot for popular music production. Fostered by the democratic potential of new production and communication technologies, for some years the world capital of classical music was able to attract an international popular music audience because of its contemporary creativity. Ewa Mazierska, Professor of Film Studies at the University of Central Lancashire, has recently published a monograph on this popular Viennese electronic music. In this cultural historical overview she provides portraits of key players and the surrounding conditions of production, the scene and its reception from an outside perspective. In her lecture she will present the main findings of her research and discuss the special Viennese character of this musical practice.
