New media provide female artists with new possibilities to formulate, develop and present their art, since it is still true today that female artists receive less public attention than their male colleagues. In order not to deprive the general public of contemporary developments of female visions of the future, knowledge and creativity, women must be able to contribute and present their part in our history and present times.
Here, new media prove themselves an opportunity for equal access to resources and space, as well as for the development of new intermedial and interdisciplinary languages of sound. After all, new media determine the form and formulation of new art and offer an ideal (virtual) space for interlinking and sustainability.
On the phonoFemme website, the festival will be presented in great detail. At the same time, the webspace can be used actively as a communication platform for the artists and the interested community beyond the duration of the festival.
New festivals create new networks. Apart from presentation, encounters and conversations, the goal of the festival is to create a lasting exchange between female sound artists and scientists, experts from theory and practice, art and cultural politics. Together with the national and international cooperation platforms, sustainable, gender-sensitive structures in the areas of arts and culture as well as strategies to change the status quo are developed; Vienna will be established as the center of collective theoretical and content-based work.
Some of the project’s goals:
• An increased public presence of sound art by women artists
• International networking and exchange of information
• Examination of role stereotypes and prejudice
• Active inclusion of female theorists, scientists and educators
• Creating an awareness for the position of sound artists in society and the initiation of processes of change
• Open forms of presentation with active inclusion of the public
